Ideas For Using Up Leftover Yarn

How many of you have that bin of leftover yarn lying around? Don’t worry—we all do! The question is what to make with all those leftover skeins of yarn.

The good news is that the internet is filled with yarn scrap project ideas. But to make it easier, I will share some of my favorite scrap project ideas with you.

Scarves & Blankets

The infinity scarf above is done in a single-crochet stitch. Its length is 70″ /width is 24 sts across.

Your stash of yarn will determine how long you’ve been crocheting and how many projects you’ve completed. Blankets and scarves are a great choice if you have more yarn than you can store.

Scarfs and blankets are also great projects for beginner crocheters. They’re a great way to practice your stitches without worrying about gauge.

Tip: When organizing your stash for a big project, I suggest keeping yarns of the same material together. Arrange a color palette for the project before you start.

Dog & Cat Sweaters

My baby girl Jade. Sweater patterns are available on the YouTube channel “Last Minute Laura.”

Being a dog mom of four, I love making my pups sweaters for the cold, windy city weather. Pet sweaters are another excellent way to use that yarn stash and warm your fur baby.

Depending on the size of your animal will determine the amount of stash yarn needed for that project. But remember that your pet will look fabulous in a one-of-a-kind sweater.

Small Amigurumi Toys

The “Colorful Sea Turtle” pattern can be found here on my blog.

Small amigurumi are another great way to use up that extra yarn stash. You don’t need a lot of yarn to make small crocheted toys.

Looking at my yarn stash inspired me to create my colorful sea turtle pattern. This pattern is a great way to use up various scraps of yarn.

Granny Squares

This blanket I made for my daughter when she went off to college.

Granny squares are another great way to use up leftover yarn. They are great because they are very versatile. Granny squares can be crocheted in the traditional square form or hexagons. You can really get creative with the color of your project.

Depending on the amount of yarn will determine your project. Granny squares can be made into headbands, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, etc.

Scrubbies or Coasters

Scrubbies, or coasters, are another idea for yarn stash projects. They are a super easy, beginner-friendly project.

You’ll want to use only cotton yarn for face scrubbies. Cotton is excellent for absorbing water when wet. Coasters can be crocheted with any extra yarn you have on hand. Both use up such little amount of yarn to make.

Baskets

Crocheted baskets are great for just about anything. They are also another great way to use up leftover yarn. You can crochet them with any yarn material you have on hand. Plus, they are great for storing all that extra yarn.

No matter what you decide to make with all that leftover yarn, keep in mind two things:

  1. Anything you make with yarn scraps will be one-of-a-kind and original. You’ll never be able to duplicate the same colors on another project.
  2. If you sell your handmade things, you’ll be sure to stand out from all the rest of the crochet vendors. Just remember to organize your shades of yarn before starting a scrap project.

If you are excited to start your first or a new scrap project, that is awesome! I hope that my ideas inspire you to make something fun and creative. Have fun creating a unique crochet project.

Happy Crocheting Journey
