How To Make Simple Stitch Markers

A stitch marker is your best friend when knitting and crocheting. Stitch marks are a helpful tool for holding a spot in your knitted project or indicating when you’ve finished crocheting a round.

You may already have a favorite stitch marker that you love to use, like a bobby pin or a plastic locking-style stitch marker.

Maybe you’ve seen cute little decorative stitch markers on Esty or at your local craft store.

These stitch markers are easy to make and fun for picking out cute little charms.

Materials Needed

Making homemade stitch markers is quite simple. You can go to any craft store and find all the items needed for the project in the handmade jewelry section of the store.

The first item you’ll need is some cute charms. You’ll want to ensure they are light enough that they won’t be able to pull down your yarn stitch when clipped on. I found so many cute charms, and I wanted to buy all of them.

Next, you’ll need a 9 or 10-mm jump ring. Also, the color and gauge will be your preference. I used both a heavy and lightweight gauge for the stitch markers I made.

Then you’re going to need a lobster clasp. I initially bought a 20mm lobster clasp, and it works well. Then, however, I went to another craft store to purchase more and bought a 23mm clasp because I couldn’t find the 20mm size at that particular store. The 23mm is slightly bigger and works well with my charms and jump ring.

The last item you’ll need is some jewelry pliers.

I made these stitch markers with little wooden fox charms.

Making The Stitch Markers

Step 1: Use your jewlery plier to slightly open your jump ring (depending on the ring’s gauge will determine how much force you’ll need).

Step 2: Insert your charm and lobster clasp onto the open jump ring.

Step 3: Retake your jewlery pliers and close the ring. Ensure it is closed enough to where the charm or clasp can’t fall off.

And it’s that simple!

Conclusion

Again, these crochet stitch markers are quick and easy to make. You can make them with three simple steps and whip them up in less than 30 minutes.

Since I’m more of a crocheter than a knitter, I made mine all with the lobster clasp, but if you’d like to make some for knitting, you’ll want to make them with just the jump ring. But first, ensure the jump ring is big enough to fit your knitting needles.

Maybe you don’t want to make these stitch markers for crocheting or knitting. These markers also work great as a clip for your keychain, handbag zipper, or an added charm to your child’s backpack.

Whatever you decide to make them for, these stitch markers will make a great gift or a quick, simple project to sell at a craft fair or an online shop.

And there you have it! I genuinely hope you’ll find these little charming stitch markers to be a fun project.
