Sesame Street: One Hat Wonder by Lion Brand

“Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street” is an iconic phrase we all grew up with. Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, and Earnie & Bert are some of the loveable characters we all fell in love with as children.

Lion Brand has teamed up with the Sesame Street workshop and created this lovely “One Hat Wonder” yarn. Each yarn cake includes a knitted hat pattern and a loveable Sesame Street character for a hat topper.

Let’s Talk Yarn

Lion Brand’s “One Hat Wonder” has nine characters: Earnie, Bert, Grover, The Count, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster, Elmo, Big Bird, and Oscar the Grouch, and each yarn cake makes one child-size hat.

The thread is a worsted weight medium #4, 100% polyester. The texture is soft to the touch, but the yarn is thin. I did find crocheting with the yarn by itself a bit tricky. However, since the pattern on the product is a knitting pattern, the thread will probably work better for knitting.

How I used the yarn

I decided to crochet some loveys with the yarn for the characters I purchased. When working with this Lion Brand fiber, I found that two strands of yarn worked better than one.

I would love to share how I created each of my Sesame Street loveys, for these blankets make a wonderful gift.

Elmo Lovey

I used two strands of yarn with a 6.5mm crochet hook for my Elmo blanket and crocheted a basic granny square. I used the Lion Brand Elmo and Baby Bee, Stork Struck in color Angel for the yarn colors. Then, with an orange shade of yarn, I crocheted the picot stitch for the edging of my blanket.

Arms: With a 5.0mm crochet hook, start with eight single crochets into a magic circle. In a continuous round, crochet fifteen rounds of eight single crochets.

Cookie Monster Lovey

I crocheted a solid granny square blanket for Cookie Monster using a 6.5mm crochet hook. I used a Baby Blue shade by Baby Bee with the Cookie Monster yarn. For the edging, I used soft brown acrylic yarn. Finally, I decided to crochet a shell-shaped border; the brown shell-shape edge gives the appearance of half of a cookie.

I also crocheted a little round cookie for Cookie Monster to hold.

Abby Cadabby Lovey

The Abby lovey is a star shape granny square blanket that I crocheted using a 6.5mm crochet hook. Abby’s colors are pink and purple; I used pink-a-boo by Baby Bee mixed with the Abby Cadabby for the yarn shades.

For the edging on the blanket, I crocheted two rounds of single crochet with pink and purple acrylic yarn.

Big Bird Lovey

I crocheted a solid hectagon granny square for my Big Bird blanket. Again, I crocheted this lovey with two strands of yarn, Sunkisses by Baby Bee and the One Hat Wonder; Big Bird.

I decided not to add a border to this blanket and just finished it with a round of single crochet in the primary color.

Creating these beautiful lovey blankets is another excellent way to use the Sesame Street “One Hat Wonder” by Lion Brand. These fun character blankets will make great gifts for babies and toddlers.

If you plan on trying out the Lion Brand “One Hat Wonder,” please share your thoughts.

Happy Crocheting Journey!
