Fall has to be my favorite season of the year. The cooler weather, the leaves changing, fire pits in the backyard, warm cozy sweaters, and a pumpkin spice latte. Pumpkins seem to be the key ingredient in the fall season.

When it comes to the crochet community, crochet pumpkins are the craft to kick the season off.

What is a rib stitch?

These cute little crochet pumpkins are a massive beginner-friendly project. These pumpkins are super quick to make and add significant warmth to your fall decor.

This pumpkin pattern uses the rib stitch. The rib stitch is pretty standard in the crocheting and knitting community. However, if you are new to the crochet/knitting community, think of an accordion when you think of the rib stitch. The rib stitch is made by crocheting into the back loops of the stitch. So, by crocheting the back loop of each row, your piece will have these little creases that stick out and kind of look like the bellow of an accordion. And like when you pull an accordion apart, the rib stitch, when stretched, gives an elastic spring to the item.

So, why are we using the rib stitch for making crocheted pumpkins? That’s simple; in this case, we are using the rib stitch merely because we want our pumpkins to have that ridge texture as an actual pumpkin.

Let’s talk about the pattern.

To make these pumpkins, you’ll need some worsted-weight yarn acrylic or cotton. I used Premier Just Yarn from my local Dollar Tree, But any fall-colored yarn will work. I also used a 4.00mm crochet hook, poly-fill stuffing, a tapestry needle, and a pair of scissors.

These pumpkins are crocheted flat in a rectangular shape piece. Then the piece is folded in half with the sides sewn together. Next, the base and top of the pumpkin are sewn by weaving the tapestry needle in and out along the edge to close.

For the stem, you’ll crochet in the back bumps of the chain. Then you’ll fold the pumpkin stem in half and sew each side of the piece.

Again, these little crocheted pumpkins are a fast and easy project. They are great for making and selling at local craft fairs. These pumpkins are about 2″x 2″ in size and make incredible decorations for your home or as gifts.
